Abstract:
This paper raises concerns about cultural differences between the East and West that often result in misunderstandings between Chinese students and Western teachers. Cultural differences frequently create obstacles and difficulties in both the teaching process for the English language instructors and learning process for Chinese students. Relevant Chinese and Western teaching methods are compared, along with the Chinese culture of learning, views of communication, and the importance of face-saving. Approaches to raising awareness of the cultural differences in the classroom are provided at the end of the paper.
